GOAN by Origin. PORTUGUESE by Right. 🇮🇳🇵🇹
During my recent visit to Goa, I had countless conversations that left me both inspired and a little concerned.
I met people with rich family histories, stories of parents and grandparents who lived through the transition of Goa from Portuguese rule to Indian sovereignty. Many of them had one thing in common — they were eligible for Portuguese citizenship through their ancestry... but they didn’t know it.
Some were unsure about the eligibility criteria. Others had heard it was too complicated, or assumed they had missed the chance altogether.
So let me clear up a few things, because this is important:
✨ Did you know?
If your parents or grandparents were born in Goa before 19th December 1961, you might be entitled to Portuguese nationality by descent.
This right extends to:
Children and grandchildren of Goans born before 1961
Even if you were born in India, the UK, or anywhere else in the world
Portugal recognizes its historic connection with Goa — and has legal provisions in place to grant citizenship to eligible descendants, giving them access to a European passport, freedom of movement across the EU, and countless opportunities in Europe.
💡 Why are so many Goans missing out?
- Because the process can feel overwhelming.
- People worry about documentation, translations, bureaucracy, timelines... and unfortunately, there’s a lot of misinformation floating around.
- with the right guidance, the process is entirely doable.
